NPA Executive Meeting (Information/Resolutions)

The NPA Exco held her first meeting on the 20-21st March 2009 at the UNN and observed, resolved as follows:
  • The NPA has hosted a functional website: www.npa-edu.org members are encouraged to visit the site for NPA news etc.

NPA has updated her 2009 membership with the Federation of World Philosophical Societies.

NPA Exco is urging all member institutions to increase their membership by facilitating the registration of associate members. This is to help improve the financial base of the association.

NPA Exco has proposed the institution of a Fellowship, Honorary membership awards and Prizes to deserving professional and non-professional philosophers. The Fellowship is for distinguished professional philosophers, while Honorary membership is for distinguished members of the society who have made philosophical contributions. The prizes are to be named after renowned and distinguished African philosophers. Thus we have the following prize awards:
Prize for Sage Philosophy-to be called---Odera Oruka Prize for Sage Philosophy.
Prize for African Philosophy-to be called
    Temples Prize for African Philosophy
Prize for Critical Philosophy, to be called- Peter Bodunrin Prize for Critical Philosophy.
Prize for Speculative Thought- The Nigerian Philosophical Association Prize for Speculative Philosophy.
Note: The president Prof. JCA Agbakoba is mandated to consult with elder members of the association to provide the necessary guidelines for the organization of the awards and prizes.

The awards and prizes are to be given at the next biennual conference.

The next NPA biennual conference is scheduled to hold at the Benue State University Makurdi in May 2010. Details of the conference shall be sent to our website in due time.

The date for the submission of corrected articles from the Calabar conference has been extended to the end of April 2009. Members are encouraged to send their articles before the end of April to facilitate publication.

A bill on the creation of Philosophical Institute was presented sometime this year in February 2009. However, the bill did not get through at the House of Representative. NPA Exco is soliciting the help of members to get information about the bill and send it to our website for further action.

NPA Exco is also appealing to members to find ways of promoting the Association through public enlightenment and media discourse. In the same vein NPA Exco is asking members to get Consultants and other Linkages in order to support and sponsor NPA activities.

NPA Exco is appealing to members to send in their comments on the review of the constitution for a better organization of the NPA.

NPA is asking all member institutions to send in their representatives and membership list with their annual subscription of N5, 000.00 only to the Secretary General.

NPA Exco is to write a memo to the Federal Ministry of Education on the teaching of philosophy in secondary schools and tertiary institutions.

NPA Exco is to write a letter to the University of Jos on the issue of the award of the PhD degree in Ethics and Philosophy. NPA thinks that the inclusion of philosophy on the certificate is not proper.

NPA Exco is working on creating an e-journal for all her publications.

NPA Exco is also working towards registration with one of the e-libraries to enhance members research. NPA Exco is therefore asking members to pay their dues to the association through their representatives to aid the completion of these programs.
    Thank you.
Dr. Anshi Martin Wang Secretary General NPA
